Welcome to Dorset...
|
|
For people thinking of taking a holiday in the UK this year, Dorset has it all. Situated in the South West of England it is home to miles and miles of beautiful coastline, including the famous Jurassic Coast - a world heritage site containing a unique set of geological landforms such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door - a natural stone archway running from the adjacent cliffs into the sea.
Dorset has the highest proportion of conservation areas in England - including two heritage coasts and many sites of special scientific interest - 44% of the county is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and because of it's location on the South Coast, it has more sunshine that most of the UK.
The beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis have produced some fascinating fossil finds - including the first complete skeleton of a plesiosaur, which is now located in the Natural History Museum in London.

| The Towns |
The county town of Dorset is the market town of Dorchester - but it is best known for it's coastal holiday resorts such as Lyme Regis, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth.
Lyme Regis is famous for it's Cobb - an ancient stone harbour wall which was a significant feature in the novel Persuasion by Jayne Austen and also famously featured in the 1981 film The French Lieutenants Woman, starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. The town is host to plenty of fun activities for holidaying families, including a small aquarium, mackerel fishing trips, mini golf, arcades and 'Dinosaurland' a fossil museum located in the Old Congregational Church.

'Hobbit' author JRR Tolkien holidayed in Bournemouth for thirty years - he always took the same room at the Hotel Miramar, with a second room to write in - until he eventually bought a home and took his retirement in the town.

There are many beautiful places to stay in Dorset - whether you are on holiday - going to a wedding or attending a conference.
In 2012 Dorset will be hosting the sailing event in the Summer Olympics. The event will take place in Portland Harbour at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy where the waters have been credited by the Royal Yachting Association as the best in Northern Europe. Many hotels are being built or refurbished especially for this event and the expected influx of trade and tourism at this time. It will certainly be an exciting and unique experience for anyone lucky enough to book a reservation and attend the event.
